Everything has got to be perfect. In the bargain however, there's a lot that's sacrificed at the altar of Beauty. The care of the spinal cord is one of them. A backless outfit may demand a certain posture. A short outfit with high heels may come with a price. Orthopaedic surgeon Dr. Gautam Shetty, shares a few tips on how to do this right or with minimal stress on the backbone.

How do wearing high heels for long hours affect the spine?
Apart from being a major cause of foot and ankle problems in women, high heels may also cause gait imbalance and cause the wearer to walk unnaturally. High heels, especially those over 2 inches high, may cause body weight to be distributed excessively on the toes and the person leaning forward. To compensate for this, the person tends to lean backwards causing overarching of the lower back. Hence you may be forced to adapt a certain posture of your back and upper body in order to carry off your high heels. All of this results in increase of abnormal stresses on the lower back, hips and knees, which may trigger back pain in the long term.

What are the right things to do when wearing heels?
The sensible thing to do would be to maintain balance in terms of using high heels. Heels should be less than 2 inches with a wide heel base so that the body weight is distributed evenly. Preferably wear high heels when you are not expecting to stand or walk too much. Wear them sparingly by using other types of footwear on other days. On days when you are wearing high heels, do not forget to stretch your calf muscles and feet at the end of the day so that they recover from their journey in those high heels!

When attending red carpet events, are frequent changes in one's posture a better way to deal with the stress that the spine goes through?
Yes, frequent change of posture and avoiding inappropriate postures and movements such as excessive bending will relieve the stress on your spine.

What is the quickest remedy if the back starts aching by the end of day?
If the back starts aching by the end of the day then a bit of back stretching and sleeping on your sides on a mattress of medium firmness will help reduce discomfort. A pain killer taken for severe pain will ensure a comfortable sleep.

In case of backache caused in this scenario, what is a complete no-no for the woman?
A complete no-no in case of backache caused by this scenario is to continue wearing your heels and standing and sitting for too long! This will further aggravate the back pain.

When they wear tight outfits, many women keep their tummies tucked in to look slimmer. Does that affect the spine too (other than the stomach)?
Keeping your tummy tucked in will not affect the spine in the short term. However for women who expect to frequently wear tight outfits with heels, it is important that they maintain a good posture and strengthening your back and abdomen muscles will help in preventing back pain in the long run.

When does it get alarming? As in, when should a woman not take her backache lightly anymore?
Backache will need immediate medical attention if it is very severe, have been going on for several days or weeks and is associated with pain, tingling and numbness radiating to the legs. They should also seek medical advice if they have had several such episodes of back pain in the past.

Should women still hit the gym when going through such backache?
